The new organization will become one legal entity with a single governing body and executive leadership. The two orchestras will continue to exist and will each retain their own specific mission.
This pooling of resources creates an artistic beacon that encompasses opera, dance, and symphonic music, providing support and strategic alignment. Collaboration between the different disciplines will offer unique opportunities in the future for groundbreaking productions, strengthening Flanders' international position as a cultural region. At the same time, the merger allows us to be even more ambitious artistically.
New structure
The organization will be temporarily led by a transition directorate headed by Jan Raes, currently general director of OBV.
Jan Raes: "I know the strengths of both institutions very well. This new organization enables us to create an environment where the exceptional talent of our diverse artists can truly flourish. In this way, we build on the rich heritage of both institutions to create an inspiring story together for our audiences, our artists, and our staff."
Flemish Minister of Culture Caroline Gennez:
"With this merger, we are laying the foundation for a future-proof arts institution that can compete at the highest international level. By bringing these two complementary institutions together, we guarantee not only artistic excellence and strong cultural impact at home and abroad, but we also strengthen the entire Flemish arts sector. This institution will be a catalyst and model for inclusion and contemporary, connective leadership. At the same time, it strongly emphasizes participatory and educational programming that attracts a broad and diverse audience. In other words, it will be one of the crown jewels of Flemish arts."
