November 2005: After a concert opera performance at the Royal Elisabeth Hall in Antwerp, a journalist from an Antwerp newspaper loudly proclaims during the subsequent reception that 'she doesn't write about opera without staging, because what kind of thing is that anyway?' Well, what it was for her, nobody still knows because she didn't write about it, but without the lady realizing it, she had sparked the definitive idea to set up a website to review classical music. For well over a year and a half, Ludwig's older brother Koen had been pushing to start a website. No more newspapers, he predicted, because that'll just fail anyway. "It's all about the internet now."
End of June, nine months after the decision comes the birth: Klassiek Centraal sees the light of day. Koen is the webmaster, Ludwig is the jack-of-all-trades writer.
/9: The tandem rides solo through the landscape for 2.5 years until, in a short span of time, a number of people feel called to lend their support. Like any organization, over the years there are staff members who come and go. Get to know everyone on our 'Who is Who' page.
The webmagazine continues to grow... the Golden Label, Klassiek Centraal's quality seal, is created and awarded for the first time at the magazine's third anniversary at Castle d'Ursel (Bornem). It will be awarded annually until Covid-19 strikes.
Leadership of Klassiek Centraal is taken over in August. The website, once still designed in FrontPage, but thriving in WordPress for years, gets a fresh coat of paint a year later. A new logo and layout come with it!
The structure and design of the website are thoroughly rethought. There's a calendar, musicians, organizers, and others—professional or amateur—can create a profile, anyone can post press releases and concert announcements, upload recordings, and much more. So Klassiek Centraal is immediately the most modern and comprehensive webmagazine for classical music in Dutch.
Klassiek Centraal turns 20...
