In three parts we look at the Joseph Joachim Violin Competition, today part 2: The jury of the Joseph Joachim Violin Competition: Musical giants with a mission, part 1 read here.
The jury of the Joseph Joachim Violin Competition 2024 consists of some of the most respected musicians of our time. Led by the renowned soprano Juliane Banse, the jury brings a wealth of experience and insight to Hanover.
What do the jury members stand for and what is their crucial role in assessing the talents competing for the coveted top prize?
Juliane Banse, herself a versatile artist with a rich career as a soloist, brings her extensive experience in vocal interpretation to the judging panel. Her insight into expressivity and musicality will be invaluable in evaluating the young violinists who will take the stage in Hanover.
She is joined by some of the world's most prominent violinists, including Lorenza Borrani, Feng Ning, and Liza Ferschtman. Each of these musicians not only has an impressive solo career but also extensive experience in chamber music and orchestral playing. Their judgment will be based not only on technical perfection but also on the interpretive depth and artistic vision of the participants.
In the semifinals, András Keller joins the jury, a violinist known for his exceptional playing and deep knowledge of chamber music. His arrival marks an important moment in the competition, where participants must demonstrate that they are not only soloists but also excellent chamber musicians.
The final is judged by a jury that, in addition to Banse, Borrani, and Ferschtman, also includes Gidon Kremer, a living legend in the world of the violin. His presence on the jury will certainly be a highlight for the participants, who will need to perform their best to impress this maestro.
The judging process itself is rigorous and detailed. In the preliminary rounds, each jury member has eight votes to distribute among the participants. Only eight of them will advance to the semifinals and ultimately three of them will be able to prove themselves in the final. The winner of the top prize, the 'Joseph Joachim,' must convince at least six of the ten jury members.
The Joseph Joachim Violin Competition is not only about finding the best violinist, but also about supporting young talent in their artistic development. The jury members, with their combined experience and passion for music, play a key role in this. Their assessments will shape the future of these young musicians as they guide them on their path to an international career.
