Astor Piazzolla was barely into his thirties when he traveled to France to study composition with Nadia Boulanger at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau. Her lessons profoundly influenced his music. While Piazzolla strived to perfect his classical technique, Boulanger encouraged him to stay true to his roots in tango—she advised him not to abandon his identity, but rather to elevate and refine it. The album by the ensemble L'Acheron celebrates the meeting of these two musical personalities by weaving together their respective musical worlds: Piazzolla's Argentine heritage from Carlos Gardel to Alberto Ginastera and Boulanger's French influences, particularly Gabriel Fauré and Lili Boulanger, complemented by her love for early music. The works are performed by a consort of viols, enhanced with a bandoneon. The dialogue between classical works and pieces from Piazzolla's Parisian period brings this extraordinary exchange back to life: unexpected, magical, and utterly unique.
