In 2024 we celebrate the centenary of the death of Giacomo Puccini, who died in Brussels on 29 November 1924. For this occasion, the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège presents on Saturday 3 February at 20.00 in a concert two early works by the Maestro from Lucca:
Le Villi, his first opera which has never been performed before on the Liège stage, and his
Messa di Gloria, composed at the end of his studies at the Milan Conservatoire.
Charming and already inspired, these works by the young composer already bear the seeds of his remarkable melodic talent and sense of theatre.
For this exceptional concert, our musical director, Giampaolo Bisanti, will conduct our Orchestra and Choir, together with the soloists Maria Teresa Leva (Anna/
Le Villi), Matteo Lippi (Roberto/
Le Villi and tenor/
Messa di Gloria) and Claudio Sgura (Guglielmo/
Le Villi and baritone/
Messa di Gloria).
This concert was born from the desire to celebrate the Puccini year, which marks the centenary of the Maestro's death. We will perform "Le Villi" in a concert version, his first opera, composed when Puccini was still very young but in which one can easily recognise all the characteristics of his art, in particular in the melodies full of pathos and extreme drama.
The "Messa di Gloria" is, on the other hand, his masterpiece in the field of sacred music: a unique work in his entire output, which enables us to reconsider his very special relationship with faith and God, through extraordinarily inspired music.
