2022 is a festive year for Meer Stemmig Gent, which celebrates its tenth edition! The festival remains true to itself with a carefully curated program in which a no-nonsense atmosphere goes hand in hand with polyphonic top quality from both international ensembles and performers from home.
This year's opening act takes place on Friday, July 1st with the renowned 12-member British ensemble Stile Antico. On Saturday, the Day of Polyphony, international and Belgian ensembles such as InVocare, Utopia and Ratas del Viejo Mundo follow. The closing performance is by the house ensemble El Grillo. There will also be two lectures, a workshop with singers from Stile Antico, guided tours of the Sint-Baafs abbey site and some small-scale performances.
On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of Gent's only early music festival, a small commemorative publication is also being released, looking back at previous editions and looking ahead to the future.
Over ten years, Meer Stemmig Gent has established itself as a small-scale but high-quality festival dedicated to polyphony. Gent is the birthplace of famous polyphonists such as Alexander Agricola or Jacob Obrecht who, like painter Van Eyck, conquered the world. In that sense alone, Gent is the perfect center to continue promoting this musical world heritage! The festival takes place at the location of the old Sint-Baafs abbey and the Sint-Macharius church.
