With the ORFEO String Quartet, four top musicians join forces to form an ambitious string quartet with which they will explore uncharted horizons in the world of chamber music. The quartet emerged from the renowned ORFEO Orchestra.
This new formation marks a new chapter for the leaders of the orchestra's string section, who are pooling their talents in a more intimate setting to explore the beautiful world of string quartet repertoire. The quartet consists of experienced musicians: Jo Vercruysse on first violin, Ann Lafaille on second violin, Mattijs Roelen on viola, and Christoph Bunzendahl on cello. Together, they bring their talent, passion, and a deeply rooted musical connection to the stage, resulting in a powerful and expressive sound.
ORFEO String Quartet wants to bring forgotten masterworks for string quartet from the twentieth century back into the spotlight. For its first project, the quartet chose works by the most important female Black classical composer from the United States: Florence Price. In this program, Price's music is combined with Antonín Dvořák's celebrated American String Quartet No. 12, her great inspiration.

Florence Beatrice Price was an American composer and pianist. As the first female Black composer, she had her work performed by a major symphony orchestra. Price was a resilient woman who defied the trials of American segregation and a violent marriage. Although of remarkable quality, her music faded into obscurity. Only recently has Price's life and work received renewed attention and a rightful place in the American classical repertoire.
