Three trios for the unusual instrumentation of flute, clarinet, and viola were published around the turn of the 19th century under the name Montelli. Various editions suggest they enjoyed considerable reputation in their time. Their structure is late Classical: opening movements with broad scope that distribute the main themes across all three instruments; concise slow central sections with a cantabile character; and finales in lively rondo forms. The name Montelli remains mysterious. It is only associated with another collection of three piano sonatas that Lemoine published in Paris around 1811, with the letter "J" as a first name.
