Antonio Domenico Nola was an active figure in sacred music of the 17th and 18th centuries in Naples; however, little is known about his life. The "Motetti pastorali per la solennità del Santo Natale" rediscovered in the archive of the Biblioteca dei Girolamini, recorded here for the first time, stages the birth of Christ as a Latin oratorio, in which airy recitatives, trios, quartets, and pastoral sounds blend into a dramaturgy of vivid emotional power. Counterpoint, linguistic eloquence, and folk character combine to form a unique Christmas fresco.
