Carel Hacquart from Bruges is regarded as one of the most important composers of the 17th century in the Netherlands. His collection Harmonia Parnassia, consisting of ten string sonatas, is considered the pinnacle of early Baroque string music in this region. Hacquart left the Catholic Southern Netherlands and settled in the Reformed North, where he was active in the musical life of the citizenry. This recording combines Hacquart's string sonatas with works for keyboard instruments from a manuscript by patrician's daughter Anna Maria van Eyl, including compositions by Gisbert Steenwick (her teacher) and Johann Jakob Froberger and Heinrich Scheidemann.
