Like all of Albena Petrović's CD albums,ESCAPE has a deeply personal and unique character. It is inspired by and developed from the idea of escape and leaving behind—not in a physical sense, but in a mental and poetic one. It follows the red thread running through all her work, always driven by the same motif: escaping reality and immersing oneself in another, more beautiful world—a world of dreams and fantasy. The themes of a dark, painful state of mind, dominated by feelings of loneliness and fear of abandonment, form a continuous source of inspiration for her. Is the desire to leave and never return a real feeling, or merely an imagined one?

Her work is largely inspired by biographical elements. This has accompanied her throughout her life and has been part of her personal destiny since she left her native Bulgaria. As always when she must reinvent herself, detached from all familiar reference points, her dreams and longings take center stage in her work. Through her fate as a 'homeless' artist—following the collapse of the political and cultural system in the East during the 1990s—her personality as an artist adopts this perspective. What she remembers in fragments seems more fictional than part of her actual life.
