This personal selection celebrates the golden age of English keyboard music from the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries and contains works by the greatest composers of that time. John Dowland's enchanting Pavanes and Galliards, arranged by Martin Peerson and William Byrd, alternate with John Tomkins' dizzying song variations, Thomas Morley and William Tisdall's swirling dances, and ravishing madrigals, set to music by Peter Philips and others. John Amners masterful O Lord, in Thee is all my trust contrasts with William Byrd's evocative, resonant variations The Bells, making the different styles of these composers clearly apparent.
This recording is an expansion of Giulia Nuti's body of acclaimed recordings on historical harpsichords; her solo recital Le Cœur et l'oreille: Manuscript Bauyn (Arcana, 2017), recorded on the harpsichord built by Louis Denis in 1658, was awarded the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik. In this recording, Giulia plays a select Italian virginal from ca. 1575.
