John Adams has assimilated numerous musical influences, and his personal style cannot be reduced to any one of them: he is neither minimalist, nor postminimalist, nor neoromantic. Of course, some of his works can be said to belong to one of these movements, but he does not consider himself the representative of a particular movement. When he refers to musical traditions in his works, it is always in a critical manner and at the same time open to the influences of pop music, rock and jazz.
