Polyphony Meets the World at Flow Midsummer Night Polyphony Festival

From June 19-21, Ostend will be the setting for the third edition of the Flow Midsummer Night Polyphony Festival, a unique event dedicated to polyphony organized by Dionysos Now! in collaboration with De Grote Post. The festival aims not only to showcase this rich musical tradition, but also to connect it with contemporary questions, other art forms, and new perspectives.

Polyphony stands as one of the most beautiful musical achievements of the Renaissance. Composers such as Adriaen Willaert, Jacobus Clemens non Papa, and many others created music in which different voices move independently while still forming a harmonious whole. This music forms the festival's starting point, but certainly not its endpoint.

Over three days, Flow brings a varied program of concerts, lectures, conversations, and encounters at various locations throughout Ostend. Music lovers can enjoy the pure polyphonic sounds of Dionysos Now! in The Legacy of Adriaen Willaert, while the Delle Donne Consort demonstrates how Renaissance music can still sound surprisingly relevant today.

The festival also actively seeks dialogue with other musical worlds. The Syrian violinist and composer Shalan Alhamwy presents a program around the Gruuthuse Manuscript, where music and words come together. Later in the day, Dionysos Now! and pianist Jef Neve join forces for a special concert where the legacy of Pierre de la Rue and Jacob Obrecht and the polyphonic mass tradition enter into conversation with improvisation and contemporary reflection on war and peace.

Alongside the concerts, the festival offers space for deeper exploration. During the Tore Talks, musicians and artists discuss creativity, tradition, and innovation with one another. The Pact Debate, in turn, examines the relationship between polyphony, democracy, and philosophy. On Sunday, Kurt Van Eeghem shares stories about Ostend's musical history during an aperitif conversation.

Visitors to the festival need not be experts in early music. Flow welcomes both curious listeners eager to discover a fascinating musical world and seasoned enthusiasts of Renaissance polyphony alike. The combination of concerts, conversations, and encounters makes the festival an invitation to experience and discover music, not merely listen to it.

With its blend of historical music, contemporary reflection, and artistic cross-pollination, the Flow Midsummer Night Polyphony Festival demonstrates how vibrant and relevant polyphony remains today. For anyone staying in Ostend in June or planning a cultural getaway, this festival is undoubtedly a unique opportunity to rediscover one of Europe's richest musical traditions.
