The Viennese composer, conductor, and pianist Wilhelm Grosz was a musician of remarkable versatility and far-reaching influence. Even as a young composer, he garnered considerable acclaim with his technically demanding Symphonic Variations on an Original Theme, which were praised as a 'dramatic tone poem that unfolds into symphonic grandeur – on a single instrument alone'. The 'Little Sonata' is characterized by great depth and clarity of expression, while the waltz transcriptions aligned with the Johann Strauss boom in London during the 1930s. The highly original "Three Pieces" were rediscovered shortly before this recording. Gottlieb Wallisch has performed in the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including Carnegie Hall in New York and the Beethoven Festival in Bonn. He has made countless recordings for record labels and collaborated with renowned conductors and orchestras. In 2012, he was appointed a Steinway artist.
