For his tenth solo recording for Alpha Classics and Outhere Music, Nelson Goerner returns to a composer he particularly admires: Schumann – here featuring the Davidsbund, the imaginary music society that Robert Schumann founded to wage war against the "Philistines", musicians such as Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti who were regarded as decorative and traditionalist. A few days after August 14, 1837, the date of his engagement to Clara, Schumann began working on the Davidsbündlertänze. Between idyllic dreams and passionate rebellion, Goerner can fully develop his pronounced gift for musical storytelling. He dedicates his subtle musicality also to Händel's 21 Variations on the Chaconne in G major, published in 1735 under the title Suite No. 2. Viennese grace and virtuosic intoxication conclude this recital with arabesques on "The Beautiful Blue Danube" by Johann Strauss Jr. in an arrangement by Polish composer Adolf Schulz-Evler (1852/54–1905).
