The Harmoniemesse is Haydn's last great sacred work. It combines liturgical solemnity with a glamorous orchestration characterized by wind instruments. The intimate, light-footed Missa brevis Sti Joannis de Deo, by contrast, embodies an introverted faith. With William Christie at the helm of Les Arts Florissants, these two sides of the composer are presented with style and poetry, supported by a first-rate quartet of singers.
