With the Sonata for Violin and Piano in C-sharp minor, op. 21, Dohnányi composed one of his most important and passionate chamber music works for violinist Victor von Herzfeld. Janáček's Sonata for Violin and Piano is his only surviving complete work for this instrumentation. He composed the main section in the summer of 1914 and attributed its emotional intensity to the outbreak of World War I. Tchaikovsky's *Souvenir d'un lieu cher*, op. 42, is one of his most intimate and beloved chamber music works. Saint-Saëns' *Introduction et Rondo Capriccioso*, op. 28, combines elegant lyricism with brilliant virtuosity and a Spanish-tinged flair.
