La festa musicale concludes the five-part documentation of Gregor Joseph Werner's compositional oeuvre with magnificent sacred music. The crowning achievement of the series consists of two large-scale masses, brimming with musical surprises ranging from harmonic drama to radiant exuberance. They captivate with expansive fugues, skillfully crafted arias, and profound ensemble passages. Werner proves himself a keen scholar of Palestrina's tradition and a pioneering innovator for the coming Viennese Classical period. The program is completed with the motet "Iam hyems transiit." It premiered as part of the mass of the same name and was composed, like that work, for two trumpets and timpani, violins, and basso continuo. The fourth discovery on this album of premiere recordings is a small, spirited string symphony. The vocal sections of the vocal works are performed by a double quartet under the direction of internationally renowned soloists. Under the musical direction of Anne Marie Harer, this is a good-natured testament that Werner's music, long silenced and overshadowed by Haydn, urgently deserves to be brought back into the light and into the concert repertoire of sacred music.
