Today, Ivan Wyschnegradsky is regarded as one of the pioneers of microtonal music, and his works are performed worldwide. Throughout his life, he also composed pieces for solo piano, most of which can be heard for the first time on this album. The program moves backward through time: from the Étude sur le carré magique sonore, op. 40, to the Préludes from his youth, which were created in 1916 in Saint Petersburg, shortly before he left Russia for good to settle in Paris, where he lived until 1979. Pianist Martine Joste, a close confidante of the composer, premiered numerous works by Ivan Wyschnegradsky; he especially appreciated her sensitive and dynamic playing. In 1983, she founded the Ivan-Wyschnegradsky-Gesellschaft together with Claude Ballif to promote his work. The CD is released on the Shiiin label as a co-production with the association, supported by the Francis and Mica Salabert Foundation, and includes a 33-page booklet in French and English.
