Austrian mezzo-soprano Sophie Rennert, accompanied by the talented pianist Joseph Middleton, presents a selection of Schubert songs that combines popular masterworks with lesser-known gems. Sophie Rennert's extensive opera repertoire spans from Baroque to contemporary works and includes Purcell, Rameau, Händel and Vivaldi, as well as Mozart and operetta – numerous recordings with leading figures from the early music scene also highlight the quality of her voice. It was only a matter of time before she lent her voice to Schubert's highly dramatic lieder.
The title of this recital, "Irrlichter," her first for BIS Records, comes from Rennert's favorite song "Des Fischers Liebesglück." And like a will-o'-the-wisp, the composer leaves us guessing. Is the song a memory or simply a deep, unfulfilled longing? This feeling, which permeates all of Schubert's music, is to some extent the golden thread running through this collection of lieder with their twilight atmosphere. Each of these Schubert songs embodies a different dream, a different yearning waiting to be discovered.
