Joseph Haydn composed the three symphonies on this album (part 5 of the "Late Symphonies" series) in the mid-1780s with a sense of triumph. Although he was still in the service of the Esterhazy family, he had recently been granted permission to publish his music independently and accept commissions from outside. A series of symphonies was subsequently commissioned by a newly established ensemble in Paris. While superficially similar, they reveal Haydn's boundless creativity, whether in the strikingly colorful introduction of No. 84, the rustic interludes in the trio section of No. 85 – a favorite of Marie Antoinette – or in the grandest of the Paris symphonies, No. 86 – here the transition from the slow introduction to the main section is unparalleled in his output. Adam Fischer and the Danish Chamber Orchestra are renowned for their recordings of classical music. Their interpretation of Haydn's symphonies is characterized by dynamic contrasts, clarity, and an approach reminiscent of chamber music.
