The Mithras Trio's second album on the Linn label presents early works by Shostakovich, Korngold and Lisney, continuing the "fascinating and eclectic" programming that The Guardian praised on their debut album Eros. Fountain of Youth focuses on the surprisingly large number of piano trios that composers wrote at the beginning of their careers and features the world premiere recording of Petrichor by cellist and composer Joy Lisney. The work was commissioned by the Mithras Trio and premiered at Wigmore Hall in January 2023. The poetic title refers to petrichor—the earthy scent that arises when rain falls on dry ground. Two youthful works by Shostakovich and Korngold complete the album: Shostakovich's first piano trio already echoes his mature style, where the grotesque and late-romantic moments collide in a single-movement trio. And in Korngold's first published composition, the Piano Trio op. 1, the unmistakable style and extraordinary maturity of the young composer are clearly evident, despite the influences of Mahler, Strauss and Puccini.
