Divine Impresario is a portrait of the famous castrato Nicolò Grimaldi (Nicolini) featuring American countertenor Randall Scotting, accompanied by the Academy of Ancient Music under Laurence Cummings. With arias and duets written for Nicolini by Händel, Porpora, Gasparini, Mancini, Giaj, Broschi and Ariosti, the album resurrects music closely connected to his stage career in Italy and London. Many pieces are recorded in new performance versions based on early sources. Soprano Mary Bevan is also heard in the duets. This delightful program highlights Nicolini's influence as a singer and actor and presents a repertoire that was defining for opera in the early 18th century.
