Jean Roger-Ducasse studied composition under Gabriel Faure alongside Maurice Ravel. In 1902, he took second place in the Grand Prix de Rome competition, while Ravel, as it happened, only won fourth prize (Ayme Kunc took first with his cantata "Alcyone"). Roger-Ducasse's style is not truly impressionistic, but rather harks back to Frédéric Chopin and bears more resemblance to that of Faure. The renowned British pianist Martin Jones recorded the complete piano works of Jean Roger-Ducasse in 2015. The album brings together the most important and significant works, offering a comprehensive introduction to the oeuvre of this now nearly forgotten French master.
