This album presents a fresh arrangement of Franz Schubert's song cycle Die schöne Müllerin, performed by baritone Roderick Williams and the Carducci Quartet. Originally composed for voice and piano in 1823, the cycle sets poems by Wilhelm Müller that trace a young miller's emotional journey through hope, love, jealousy, and despair. In this recording, the piano part has been reimagined for string quartet, emphasizing the instrumental textures that Schubert's composition hinted at, while preserving the narrative arc of the songs. The arrangement offers fresh insight into the work's structure and atmosphere, highlighting the central Romantic themes of nature, longing, and contemplation.
