The double CD "She Composed – Music by Women Composers" is a project of considerable musical and cultural value that exemplarily combines artistic quality, a pedagogical concept, and meticulous editing. The recording contains piano works by female composers from different centuries and cultural backgrounds, deliberately arranged according to increasing level of difficulty – from short, characteristic miniatures to large-scale, technically and musically demanding works.
The repertoire encompasses a broad historical and stylistic spectrum: from Baroque dances by composers such as Elisabeth-Claude Jacquet de la Guerre and Elisabetta de Gambarini, through romantic piano literature by Emilie Mayer, Clara Schumann, Fanny Hensel, Louise Farrenc and Agathe Backer Grøndahl, to important voices from the 20th and 21st centuries such as Lili Boulanger, Mel Bonis, Karen Tanaka, Alicia Terzian, Dorothea Hofmann and Philippine Schick . Latin American female composers as well – including Florence Price, Teresa Carreño, María Matilde Alea, Beatriz Lockhart and Lía Cimaglia Espinosa – are prominently represented and enrich the canon with rhythmic, folkloric and urban influences.
