On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the influential French composer and conductor Pierre Boulez, the label Audite, in collaboration with the Lucerne Festival, presents a particularly valuable digital release. In the Historic Performances series, the restored live recording of the debut of the Alban Berg Quartett at the Lucerne Festival in 1983 is released for the first time. A historic moment in which the ensemble performed two movements from Boulez' complex and rarely performed Livre pour quatuor.
A double debut
The concert marked not only the first appearance of the Alban Berg Quartett at the prestigious Lucerne Festival, but also Pierre Boulez' Lucerne debut as a composer in the innovative concert series Musica nova. The performance was recorded by Swiss radio at the time, but remained hidden in the archives for decades. Now, more than 40 years later, this recording has finally been made available in digital form – a beautiful tribute to Boulez, who maintained a deep bond with the city not only as a composer but also as founder and inspiration of the Lucerne Festival Academy.
A rare interpretation
The Alban Berg Quartett, already internationally renowned in 1983, ventured into Boulez' Livre pour quatuor – an extremely demanding work from the early 1950s, composed in strict serial style. The four movements, or rather studies, are steeped in Boulez' search for sound structure and formal experimentation. The interpretation of the Alban Berg Quartett was characterized by a silvery-warm tone, expressive yet faithful to the score, with carefully worked out dynamics and dramatic accents. Boulez himself expressed his appreciation, though this remained the only performance by the ensemble.
Thanks to the recording, we can now once again witness these musical high points, where the fire and precision of the quartet merge with the rigorous beauty of Boulez' musical language.
A look behind the scenes
The digital release is enriched with a downloadable Digibooklet featuring a recent interview with Günter Pichler, the first violinist of the Alban Berg Quartett. He reflects on the collaboration with Boulez and shares unique insights into the preparation and performance of this challenging composition. His reflections not only provide context, but also a personal glimpse into the artistic process that underlay this recording.
Innovative presentation
The release fits into Audite's endeavor to make historic highlights from music history accessible to a broad audience. In addition to a high-quality HD download, the recording is now also available in Dolby Atmos – a premiere for this repertoire – via all relevant digital platforms. Exclusive photographs from the archive and the aforementioned Digibooklet complete the experience.
For those interested in the work of Boulez, the history of the Lucerne Festival, or the interpretive excellence of the Alban Berg Quartett, this digital release is an absolute must. It combines musical excellence with historical significance and makes a unique concert moment tangible again – not as a relic, but as a living experience.
