Proserpine was composed in 1680 and marks the reunion of Lully and Quinault after the scandal surrounding Isis (1677). The work is set in the magnificent Saint-Germain and offers a mythological reflection of the crown prince's marriage. Herein Lully revolutionizes his art: the orchestra becomes the driving force behind the drama, while the voices become more expressive.
Under the direction of Christophe Rousset, Les Talens Lyriques bring this jewel back to life in which the fate of a captive queen and the splendor of restored peace are united in immortal harmony.
