The violin has attracted the attention of composers from the Baroque to the present day, and no other instrument has had as many important concerti written for it as the piano, from Locatelli and Vivaldi to Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and many others. It may seem unimaginable that this instrument, with its single bow on four strings, would be capable of performing polyphonic works from the piano, vocal and orchestral repertoire without accompaniment, but this is precisely what the great virtuosos from the early Romantic period to modern times repeatedly saw as a challenge in their compositions. Paganini, Ernst and their successors pushed the technical possibilities of the violin to the limit, and with this cd we present the most important of these works, which are otherwise often regarded as salon or encore pieces. The result is musical jewels, ranging from practically complete songs such as the Erlkönig to Isang Yun's masterful arrangement of Bach's Musical Offering.
