De viool heeft de aandacht getrokken van componisten van de barok tot nu, en geen enkel ander instrument heeft zoveel belangrijke concerti geschreven als de piano, van Locatelli en Vivaldi tot Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms en vele anderen. Het lijkt misschien onvoorstelbaar dat dit instrument, met zijn ene strijkstok op vier snaren, in staat zou zijn om polyfone werken uit het piano-, zang- en orkestrepertoire zonder begeleiding uit te voeren, maar dit is precies wat de grote virtuozen van de vroege romantiek tot aan de moderne tijd herhaaldelijk als een uitdaging zagen in hun composities. Paganini, Ernst en hun opvolgers dreven de technische mogelijkheden van de viool tot het uiterste, en met deze cd presenteren we de belangrijkste van deze werken, die anders eerder als salon- of toegiftstukken worden bestempeld. Het resultaat zijn muzikale juweeltjes, variërend van praktisch complete liederen zoals de Erlkönig tot Isang Yun's meesterlijke bewerking van Bach's Musical Offering.
