Hayoung Choi wins the 2022 Cello Competition! She receives the Grand International Queen Elisabeth Prize – Queen Mathilde Prize worth EUR 25,000 as well as a series of concerts in Belgium and abroad.

Hayoung Choi was born in Bielefeld, Germany. She studied successively at the Korean National University of Arts, the Purcell School for Young Musicians and with Frans Helmerson and Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt at the Kronberg Academy. She won First Prize in a number of international music competitions, including the Krzysztof Penderecki Cello Competition, the Brahms Competition in Austria – of which she was the youngest ever winner at age thirteen –, the Antonio Janigro cello competition and the Justus Dotzauer Competition for young cellists. As a soloist she performed with, among others, Kremerata Baltica, the Salzburger Camerata, the Opern- und Museumsorchester Frankfurt and the Suwon Philharmonic Orchestra. In the field of chamber music, Hayoung Choi shared the stage with musicians such as Gidon Kremer, Christian Tetzlaff, Kim Kashkashian, Jörg Widmann, Mitsuko Uchida, Antoine Tamestit, Elena Bashkirova and Martin Helmchen. Now she can also add first prize KEW22 to her résumé.

Laureate Concerts


The recitals begin with the unranked laureates at Flagey, on Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 June at 8:15 p.m.

During the laureate concert of the 4th, 5th and 6th laureate on Tuesday 14 June at 8 p.m. at the Brussels Palace of Fine Arts, Oleksiy Shadrin, Petar Pejčić and Bryan Cheng perform with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra conducted by Giordano Bellincampi. The concert will be broadcast live on Klara. In the same formation they perform on Saturday 11 June in the Queen Elisabeth Hall in Antwerp.

The closing concert with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd laureates will take place on Thursday 16 June at 20:00 in the Brussels Palais pour Beaux-Arts. Hayoung Choi, Yibai Chen and Marcel Johannes Kits perform with the Belgian National Orchestra conducted by Eivind Aadland. The concert will be broadcast live on Klara, Ketnet, vrt.nu and on the KEW website.

This concert will continue in Charleroi (Saturday 18 June, Palais des Beaux-Arts), at the Leuven City Theatre on Sunday 19 June, in Liège (Thursday 23 June, Salle Philharmonique), in Hasselt (Friday 24 June, Cultuurcentrum) and at the Bruges Concertgebouw on Saturday 25 June.

On Sunday 26 June, the RTBF audience award winner, Stéphanie Huang, may perform at the Festival Musiq3 in Flagey.
