Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks
The Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunk (English: Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation) in Munich is the largest symphony orchestra of the Bayerischer Rundfunk. It is one of the orchestras in Munich, together with the Münchner Philharmoniker and the orchestra of the Bayerische Staatsoper. The orchestra's home venues are the Philharmonie am Gasteig and the Herkulessaal of the Münchner Residenz in Munich.
The orchestra was founded in 1949, with members from an earlier radio orchestra in Munich. Eugen Jochum was the first chief conductor from 1949 to 1960.
The orchestra is among the best in Germany and enjoys a high international reputation. The focus of its programming is the symphonic music of the Second Viennese School and Romanticism. The orchestra also devotes much attention to contemporary music, in connection with the Musica Viva series, founded in 1945 by the composer Karl Amadeus Hartmann. The orchestra is regularly engaged for radio and television recordings of the Bayerischer Rundfunk, CD recordings and operas, often together with the choir of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation.
From the beginning, the orchestra performed works by composers such as Igor Stravinsky and Darius Milhaud. Later came Karlheinz Stockhausen, Mauricio Kagel, Luciano Berio and Péter Eötvös. Several of these composers also shared the stage with the orchestra.
