Anna Fedorova verkent de intriges van de duisternis in deze programmatische en uiterst virtuoze werken voor piano solo. De reis van duisternis naar licht begint met Scriabins angstaanjagende Sonate "Black Mass". Het werk verbeeldt een satanisch ritueel bezeten door het spook van de Mephistophelean Liszt. De Falla's suite uit El Amor brujo roept een mysterieuze wereld op vol magie, rituelen en spookachtige bezoeken. Ravel omschreef zijn Gaspard de la nuit als "romantisch en van transcendente virtuositeit". Deze zeer suggestieve stukken zijn gebaseerd op de prozagedichten van Aloysius Bertrand, die scènes uitbeelden met een gehangene kreunend aan de galg en een duivelse dwerg. Moessorgski's Schilderijententoonstelling toont veel duistere scènes, maar komt in het licht met de Grote Poort van Kiev, waarin triomfantelijke episodes worden afgewisseld met momenten van religieuze contemplatie.
