Gioacchino Rossini - Stabat Mater. Programme Gioacchino Rossini Stabat Mater The Sunday following All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, The Sunday Morning Concert is dedicated to mourning and loss. In Rossini's Stabat mater, Mary grieves at her crucified son, with drama and introspection. The Groot Omroepkoor, like no other ensemble, brings to life the great emotions that opera composer Rossini has captured in these notes. Rossini's Stabat mater A Stabat mater is a musical pietà: Mary mourning her crucified son. In the hands of supreme opera composer Rossini, the sorrowful intimate scene becomes almost a lyrical opera, against a liturgical background. Rossini strings together one vocal jewel after another in this perfect balance between drama and contemplation, from the familiar tenor aria 'Cujus animam' and the dramatic 'Inflammatus' to the moving a cappella moment 'Quando corpus morietur' and the imposing closing 'Amen'. The piece undoubtedly ranks among the most beautiful sacred choral works. Groot Omroepkoor The Groot Omroepkoor, together with the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest, forms an important pillar in the programming of The Sunday Morning Concert. A cappella, the choir absolutely holds its own, but as the only professional choir in the Netherlands that performs the great choral-symphonic repertoire, this vocal top ensemble truly shines when it shares the stage with the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest. Choir and orchestra are completely attuned to each other, and that is evident. Under the direction of Edward Gardner – who as former chief conductor of the London Philharmonic belongs to the absolute world elite – it promises to be an impressive morning.
