New Year's Concert: Royaal

With ROYAAL the Euregio Jeugdorkest brings a programme full of grandeur and royal imagination. The young musicians take the audience to royal courts, fairy-tale palaces and mythical kingdoms.

The concert opens with the festive coronation march Orb and Sceptre by William Walton, written for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, a majestic opening that immediately sets the tone. This is followed by the enchanting waltz and dramatic midnight moment from Cinderella by Sergei Prokofiev, in which the fairy tale of Cinderella comes to life. For trombonist Jan Van de Watering, a dream also came true in May 2026: winning the Prinses Christina Concours. He gets to shine together with the orchestra in the fantastic Tromboneconcerto in C by Nino Rota. Further in the programme we hear dances from Le Cid by Jules Massenet, a story set at the Spanish court and bursting with temperament. After the interval, the poetic symphonic narrative La Princesse lointaine by Nikolai Tsjerepnin opens, followed by the spectacular Belkis, Regina di Saba by Ottorino Respighi, a shimmering musical fresco around the legendary Queen of Sheba. As a finale, the iconic throne room from Star Wars sounds with music by John Williams: a triumphant finale that perfectly fits the royal atmosphere of this evening.

ROYAAL thus becomes a concert full of majesty, fairy tales and exotic splendour, performed with the energy, talent and enthusiasm of young musical talents.
