Looking at the gaze: With all the darkness outside and festive lights inside, everybody wants to be seen on the dance floor. In Verdi's La traviata, Violetta Valéry especially stands in the spotlight. She is surrounded by gazes. Some only see her glittering appearance. Others look at her lovesick, like Alfredo Germont. His father, however, is more concerned when he sees Violetta. To protect his reputation, he feels compelled to make Violetta do the impossible… Director Tom Goossens, who directed Mozart's Don Giovanni last season, broadens the directions of the gaze in his Traviata and lets the characters wrestle with the question of who can look at whom in what light. Do they have control over how they are viewed? A play between reality and performance unfolds, which also continues beyond the boundaries of the stage.
