This recital by tenor Jean-François Borras is a tribute to the fascinating history of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, the house that has performed more French repertoire than any other. Jean-François Borras, who received his first training in the choir of Monte-Carlo Cathedral and is an internationally recognized ambassador of the French vocal style, presents here excerpts from works by Mascagni, Gunsbourg and Massenet, which were composed there for the Opéra. Raoul Gunsbourg was director of the Opéra de Monte Carlo (architect Charles Garnier) from 1893 to 1951, and the diversity of his programmes helped the institution achieve extraordinary fame. Borras sings arias from operas that he performed on the stage of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, including Roméo et Juliette (Gounod), Manon, Hérodiade, Werther (Massenet), Carmen (Bizet) and Les Contes d'Hoffmann (Offenbach), accompanied by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo under the direction of Pierre Dumoussaud, a young French conductor and specialist in opera repertoire who has just begun an international career.
