Throughout history, the expansive landscapes and mythical cultures of the Scandinavian countries have kindled the imagination of artists. Finnish horn player Markus Maskuniitty and pianist Martin Sturfalt perform works that span more than a century in time, yet all draw their inspiration from these themes. The compositions gathered here approach these Scandinavian subjects from different angles, combining influences from traditional folk music with contemporary classical techniques, while exploring the lyrical and dramatic possibilities of the horn and its rich tonal palette. Recent compositions by Piers Hellawell, Tryggvi M. Baldvinsson, Albert Schnelzer and Benjamin Staern are combined with older works by Carl Nielsen, Hugo Alfven and Julius Röntgen, including 'From Jotunheim' by the latter, a suite characterized by an irresistible Norwegian character in all five parts, in which everything is quoted, from cattle calls to lullabies, with plenty of rustic folk dances in between. This imaginative programme, compiled by Maskuniity and Sturfalt, highlights the unique character of Nordic musical identity.
