Dmitri Shostakovich is primarily famous for his symphonies and string quartets: compositions in which humor can be found, but even more brooding, darkness and desolation. But Shostakovich also has a brutal, lighthearted side, and nowhere does that come to the fore better than in the works brought together here, whether it's the jazz suites, the Tahiti Trot or the ballet suites.
