Schattenspiele brings together various facets of the remarkable creative world of Gebhard Ullmann. The boundaries between composition and improvisation, structure and spontaneity blur. These works have been developed over many years. They reflect an artistic journey of continuous reinvention. Musical ideas evolve through performance, reflection and collaboration. The album reveals Ullmann's unmistakable voice: lyrical, adventurous and infinitely inventive. You hear this from the atmospheric Kleine Symphonie with the Berlin-based, adventurous LUX:NM ensemble to the vibrant colors of Hell und Bunt for the Adumá Saxophone Quartet and the deeply personal solo works for bass clarinet. The recording captures this music with exceptional intimacy and clarity: Ensemble works: recorded in the renowned Bonello Studio in Berlin. The performances have been preserved almost entirely live. This preserves their organic energy and directness. Solo works and saxophone quartet: recorded in Guy Sternberg's celebrated Low Swing Studio. Central to this is the lovingly restored, vintage Neve mixing console. Its warm, transparent sound forms a perfect complement to the expressive depth and rich tonal palette of Ullmann's bass clarinet and chamber music. Together, these extraordinary recording spaces bring every nuance of Schattenspiele vividly to life!
