Residentie Orkest
The Residentie Orkest (RO) in The Hague, known abroad as The Hague Philharmonic, is a Dutch symphony orchestra founded in 1904 by Henri Viotta. The name refers to the fact that The Hague is the residence (seat of government) of the Netherlands.
The birth of the Residentie Orkest dates from around 1903. On 7 February 1903, a concert was given in the Gebouw voor Kunsten en Wetenschappen on the Zwarteweg. For the first time, the posters bore the name "Residentie-Orkest". After this concert, efforts were made to further develop the orchestra. A special founding committee oversaw the implementation of the plans. A series of Sunday afternoon concerts was started in the hall of Diligentia on the Lange Voorhout. On 20 November 1904, another concert took place in the Gebouw voor Kunsten en Wetenschappen. This date is now regarded as the official founding date of the Residentie Orkest.
In 1904, the first concert took place under the direction of the founder, Henri Viotta. In the years before, he had already devoted himself particularly to the performance of symphonic music in the Netherlands. The orchestra soon made a name for itself. In 1911 it held a festival devoted to the music of Richard Strauss, who came to conduct in person. In 1928, Igor Stravinsky conducted several of his own works with the orchestra. In 2010, this concert was reconstructed.
