Meer dan 60 componisten hebben het libretto van Metastasio voor *L'Olimpiade* op muziek gezet. Tot hen behoren onder andere Caldara, Vivaldi, Hasse, Leo en Scarlatti, evenals Piccinni, Paisiello en Cherubini, maar ook Pergolesi, die zijn "Olimpiade" tijdens het carnaval van 1735 in het Teatro Tordinona in Rome opvoerde. Het zou zijn laatste opera seria worden, want de componist stierf het jaar daarop op slechts vijfentwintigjarige leeftijd. Zijn versie wordt door velen beschouwd als de meest geïnspireerde van allemaal, gekenmerkt door muzikale originaliteit en een vrolijke frisheid die tegelijkertijd briljant en verfijnd is. Na de herontdekking van de ongepubliceerde mis in D-majeur keren Giulio Prandi en zijn Ghislieri-Ensemble terug naar Pergolesi met een opname van zijn opera-meesterwerk, die tot stand is gekomen in het 18e-eeuwse theater in Jesi, zijn geboortestad: een initiatief van de Pergolesi-Spontini-Stichting, die zich al vele jaren inzet voor zijn nalatenschap.
