Hoewel Charles Villiers Stanford tegenwoordig bekender is om zijn symfonische muziek, heeft hij een divers oeuvre nagelaten. Ter gelegenheid van de 100e sterfdag van de componist presenteren The Sixteen een reeks van zijn Ierse volksliedjes en koorliederen in hun eerste opnames. De koorwerken behoren tot het beste wat hij creëerde en tonen een fantasierijke componist die uitstekend wist te componeren voor stemmen. In zijn Ierse folksongs vangt hij alles van vurige wraak tot hartstochtelijke liefde met maximale impact.
